I arrived at the lake around 7:30 pm and was pleasantly surprised to find it empty. (Two nights previously, I arrived to find six anglers doing the night and went home).
There was a slight southwest wind blowing, and it was forecast to pick up overnight, so I opted for the first swim, where a southwest wind blows straight into it.
I hadn’t fished this swim before, so I had a lead about it. I found a nice, firm area, clear of silkweed, about 9 wraps out along the right-hand margin in 8 feet of water. A bottom bait went on this rod.
I found some gravel about 12 wraps out in front. On recasting in the zone, I couldn’t find the gravel again, but it was quite firm, with some silkweed in places. The middle rod, with a hinge stiff rig and a 2-inch pop-up, went on this spot.
I found a smooth area out to my left with about nine wraps. I did pull in a bit of silkweed on one cast. Other casts were clear. I decided to change the bottom bait on this rod (left-hand rod), and I got a good drop.
A kilo of Boilies was spread between the three rods. On setting up in the evening, I saw fish off the reeds down the other end of the lake and one in the open water opposite me.
The wind picked up during the night, and the conditions looked promising in the morning, with the SW wind pushing into the swim.
No fish, though, unfortunately. On reeling, the right-hand rod and middle rod came in clear. The left-hand rod was covered in silkweed. Even though I got a good drop, the silkweed must have covered it overnight.
Silkweed covering the rig has happened to me a few times at this venue. You lead in the spot, and the zone is clear. Get a good drop, but the rig is covered in the morning. Moving forward, I’ll probably use hinge stiff rigs all the time to combat this issue.
